Martin Luther King was born in the south. He was a protestant clergyman (his job was to do the services in churches). He knew very well America's laws, because he studied law at university. In Montgomery, he began the boycott: all Black people in the town refused to use local buses and they went to work on foot, by bike, or how they could. The bus boycott lasted for 381 days !! But Martin Luther King and Rosa won: the US Supreme Court declared that Black and White people were equal on buses!!

On 28th, August , 1963, Martin Luther King organised a massive meeting in Washington. This was to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the end of slavery. Many people (White and Black) were present and they all listened to Martin Luther King's famous speech "I have a dream".

Martin Luther King was murdered in April, 1968.

Every year, America remembers this man on the third Monday of January (Martin Luther King's Day).
